False Confession: How did the defense prove ‘murder’ was actually suicide?

An apparent suicide turned to suspected homicide when the Marine Sergeant victim’s best friend, a Lance Corporal, confessed twice to shooting him point-blank in the head. The weapon’s safety found on seemed to corroborate his story. However, expert testimony at the Article 32 hearing convinced the investigating officer the confessions were false. How did the defense accomplish this?
